Today is World Suicide Prevention Day and I want to take a moment to share my thoughts.
I have personally been touched by suicide in a profound way - and what I believe to be true is that suicide is complicated. There doesn't seem to be one easy answer or one easy solution to this complex problem. There are layers upon layers as to why it happens.
And I know I cannot solve them all.
I can advocate for and vote for behaviors, systems, and social structures that honor the basic needs and rights of ALL humans (especially those who have been historically marginalized)
and I can LOVE.
I can love so fiercely (and without any type of agenda whatsoever) that the people in my life KNOW they can come to me no matter what.
They can tell me the truth of who they are and what they are going through and I will not shame them.
I will not blame them.
I will not diminish their pain.
I will not gaslight them.
Because
LOVE
LISTENS.
End
of
story.
(Also, to be perfectly clear, I DO know that I am not a healthcare professional, so if someone is in crisis, I know I must call for help.)
